The Tortoise

A kind of turtle living only on land,
especially in arid regions having
stumpy legs and a high arched
carapace. They hatch from eggs.

Head

  The front part of a tortoise
containing the eyes, mouth and brain.
The head is covered by hard scales
and can be pulled within the shell.

Neck

  The part that connects
the head with the shoulders.

Plastron

  The under part of the shell
of a turtle or tortoise.

Claws

  A sharp, horny, hooked nail
on a bird's or animal's foot.

Tail

 The hind most part of an animal.
The end of the back on most
vertebrates. The tail is small in
turtles, but is large in other
reptiles. It is useful for swimming.

Carapace

 The part of the shell that covers
the back is called the carapace.

Legs

 Limbs on which an animal
supports itself and walks. Land
turtles have heavy, short legs.
Water turtles have flippers.
