MONTESSORI ZOOLOGY : External Parts of Mammals

The Horse

A large, four legged mammal
having solid hooves and a flowing
mane and a tail of coarse hair. It has
powerful body and legs that allow it to
run fast and pull heavy loads. Horses
have been used for transportation and
farm work for thousands of years.

of a man, animal or plant.

Head

The front part of the body
uppermost, containing the
eyes, mouth and brain.

A long braid or tress of hair on
the hindmost part of an animal.

 brush off insects.

Ears

The part of the body by
which animals hear.

Eyes

The eyes of the horse are larger
than any other land animal. They are
set on either side of the head and move
 independently, allowing the horse
to look forward with one and
backward with the other.

Hooves

   The hard, horny covering
on the feet of horses. The
hooves protect the toes.

Forelegs

The front legs of an animal
having four or more legs. The
front legs absorb the jolts when
the animal runs or jumps.

Hindlegs

The rear legs of an animal
having four or more legs. The rear
legs provide power for running
 and jumping.

Neck

The part that connects the head
with the shoulder, containing
 vital passage for breathing.

The Mane

The long heavy hair on the
back of the neck of the horse.
