The Coming of Life
The Pliocene Epoch
During the Pliocene Epoch, the uplift of the
Isthmus of Pananma stopped the exchange
between Atlantic and Pacific marine faunas
that had occurred for more than 125 million
years and at the same time began major,
mostly southward, migration of North
and South American mammals.
Australopithecus lived in open
woodland and grassland rather than in
forests as had the apes. Toward the end
of the Tertiary Period, the climate across
the globe brew steadily colder, leading
to the first Pliocene Ice Age.
