CIVILIZATION
Medieval Shelter
Wealthy medieval people built castles
and fortified houses for shelter and to protect
or defend themselves against invasion by
bandits or enemies. They were built of stone
and mortar and were usually erected on
hilltops, in marshy ground, or other strategically
defensive locations. The lord and his family lived
in private rooms, and the servants, cooks and
grooms worked in the manor or castle in
exchange for the protection it provided.
Peasant homes were usually very
small with only one or two rooms
and thatched roofs.
