CIVILIZATION
Medieval Defense
Castles were built for protection in
Medieval times. Bandits and barbarians
roamed all over Europe and made frequent
attacks on villages and cities. Entire cities were
fortified to protect people and their property. The
walls of a castle were thick and built of stone,
often surrounded by a ditch filled with water,
which was called a moat. A castle usually had
many towers where archers could hide
and shoot arrows at the enemy.
